IPL – Sun Damage & Hyperpigmentation

Intense Pulsed Light therapy for clearer, more even skin

What Is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive light-based treatment that uses broad-spectrum light pulses to target pigmentation, redness, and vascular irregularities in the skin. Unlike laser treatments that use a single wavelength, IPL emits multiple wavelengths simultaneously — allowing it to address a wide range of skin tone and texture concerns in a single session.

At Flawless MD, IPL is delivered through the Nordlys platform — one of the most clinically advanced IPL systems available — ensuring precise, safe, and effective treatments for sun-damaged and pigmented skin.

What IPL Treats

  • Sunspots and age spots (solar lentigines)
  • Freckles and flat brown pigmentation
  • Rosacea and facial redness
  • Broken capillaries and spider veins
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (mild cases)
  • Uneven skin tone and dull complexion
  • Poikiloderma (redness and pigmentation on the neck/chest)

How IPL Works

Targeting Pigment

IPL light energy is selectively absorbed by melanin (the pigment in spots and freckles). The heat destroys the pigmented cells, which then rise to the surface and flake off — revealing clearer skin beneath.

Targeting Vessels

The same light pulses are absorbed by oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels — collapsing broken capillaries and reducing the redness associated with rosacea and vascular lesions.

What to Expect

1
Preparation

Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for 2–4 weeks prior. A cooling gel is applied before treatment. Eye protection is provided throughout.

2
Treatment

The IPL handpiece is placed on the skin and delivers precise light pulses. You may feel a snapping sensation similar to a rubber band. Sessions last 20–45 minutes depending on the area treated.

3
Results

Pigmented spots temporarily darken in the days following treatment before flaking away. Redness from vascular lesions typically fades within 1–2 weeks. Most patients see significant improvement after 2–4 sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

IPL works best on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III). It is not recommended for tanned or dark skin tones as it may cause unwanted pigment changes. Dr. Nam will evaluate your skin type at consultation and recommend appropriate alternatives if needed.

Most patients require 2–4 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. The number varies depending on the severity of the concern and individual skin response. Annual maintenance sessions are recommended to preserve results.

IPL has minimal downtime. You may experience mild redness for a few hours post-treatment. Pigmented spots will temporarily look darker (like coffee grounds) for 5–7 days before naturally exfoliating. Avoid sun exposure during this period.

Results can last years with proper sun protection and maintenance. However, new sun damage will continue to appear over time — annual touchup sessions help maintain your results long-term.
